Escape
Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion but an escape from emotion, says Eliot in words he has copied into his diary. 'Poetry is not an expression of personality but an escape from personality'. Then as a bitter afterthought Eliot adds: But only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from those things. J.M.Coetzee in Youth
